Winter can be taxing to all human life forms and even inanimate objects like houses and cars. This is the time wherein the fortitude and endurance of everyone is severely tested. Doing anything productive during this time can be quite a challenge. During this time, it can be hard to take photos due to the conditions. So many things need to be protected from the cold and we are not just referring to your physical self here. In this article, we will be discussing some things you can do for cold weather photography.

First and foremost, you have to take into consideration the condensation. This is a photographer’s worst nightmare aside from having their camera and equipments lost or stolen. Just like a pair of eyeglasses fogging up when temperatures change rapidly, a camera lens and the inside of the camera can fog up with condensation. As the dictionary defines it condensation is water forming on surfaces that are significantly colder or warmer than the air surrounding it. It is not a good idea to have a camera which has condensation. This is something we caution clients in my San Diego photographer service.

Second, you need to learn how to avoid condensation. A good first step is to place your camera inside a bag. It gradually brings your camera through the extreme temperature changes since sealing it inside a bag containing air the same temperature as the camera is acclimatized to. This way, any condensation forms on the bag instead of the camera as the air and camera gradually equalize to the new environment. Better to do this than have a foggy camera and ruin the photo opportunity. This has been key to getting great shots in my San Diego commercial photographer service.

Last but not least, it is important that you take care of yourself as well. It is important that you avoid having frostbites on your fingers as well as your ears or nose. It would be a good idea if you have some warm coverings such as gloves, ear muffs, scarves, jackets or hats. A big problem can be when most people would want to fine tune the settings of their camera as well as the focus, people tend to remove their gloves in favor of handling their camera better. To help you in this, you can try having layers of gloves. It would be best if you can get the thinnest material on such as cotton gloves first. And then it would be a good idea to have a fingerless glove to actually warm your hand. And the last layer would consist of the thick, removable glove to help you be more flexible and still keep warm. This way you will be protecting your fingers well.
