On the other hand, it was thought that those who failed to improve their lot in life had brought their condition upon themselves through unworthiness, and thus deserved their punishment. One highly influential urban clergyman was heard saying, “no man in this land suffers from poverty unless it be more than his fault–unless it be his sin.”

However, the rags-to-riches theme of the period was largely a myth. The truth of the matter was, even though there were a few rare cases in which a penniless person rose through the ranks, most of the wealthy came from middle-class or upper class families. This segment of the population had always possessed most of the world’s wealth and would continue to do so.*
