Understanding Internet Marketing – How this Australian Lady Did It

The term ‘internet marketing‘ sounds really complicated and technical. I know that’s what I thought when I first heard it just over two years ago. I could use a computer – in fact was quite proficient word processing, spreadsheets and had even done a night school course in desktop publishing.

But I certainly didn’t know the first thing about HTML (and still to this day do not know a lot), I am not – nor will I ever plan to be – a graphic artist. Yet I am an internet marketer, and I can build a website in around 20 minutes – and getting faster each time. I now have around 65 sites of my own, and additionally own many more domain names.

Australia’s Internet Love Affair

Australians are known to be early adopters of technology – some say it is by virtue of the country’s isolation. We have always had to work that much harder to stay in touch with the world, and have had to travel long distances to keep up with our colleagues overseas.

And Australia is vast. A flight from one side of the country takes 5 hours – and while the population concentrations are in the major cities, there a many thousands of people living in isolated communities. For everyone though, the internet has generally brought us closer to the world, so it isnt’ really surprising that we all have embraced it.

We now have some of the top interent marketers and product developers in the world, and often set the standard in innovative strategies.

My experience?

In one of those ’sliding door’ moments, I crossed paths with a man, who was learning, in his spare time, about internet marketing. Because he had seen first hand that I was able to write well, he then asked me to write some articles for him (many of these were about internet marketing). And every article I wrote taught me something more about this industry that I didn’t realize existed before.

He also suggested I build a website (I thought he was crazy!). But with his encouragement, I did build a website.

As he continued to learn more and more about this ever changing and dynamic business, he would always respond ever patiently to all of my questions, guiding me along my journet and pushing me on to achieve new levels of success. I didn't realize it at the time, but I had a mentor.

While his successful internet marketing strategies have sky-rocketed him onto the world stage – he has spoken at industry events all around the world – he is still sharing. And he has taken on more students, establishing a paid coaching forum. His students, I believe, are getting training far superior to any other available, anywhere in the world.

Like me they are learning about how to create multiple profit streams, how to create and publish videos, how to conduct interviews, what SEO is and how to get it onto the websites that you are taught, step by step to build.

We Aussies are used to traveling to find experts, and I have travelled to many different countries in the last year, attending many IM events, and getting to know the speakers. So while I may be biased, I am also in a good position to know who the internet marketers are, and who are the people who are just on stage, talking about it.

And I am a great example of how a 50-something Aussie woman can ‘get’ internet marketing.

I now have a highly successful online business which provides quality content for internet marketers. I have published my own ebook and will launch a training program in 2010. I am an affiliate marketer, and I can build a website with ease. I was very lucky that I crossed paths with my mentor that day.

Opportunities Abound

Opportunities present themselves every day, but most people don’t recognize them. It would have been very simple and easy to have walked away from that meeting and think “Hey, I might do that one day”, or “I can’t do that”. But I was at a crossroads in my life, and because this student was ready, the teacher appeared. I was ready to learn.

Age is no barrier to learning about internet marketing – neither is location as a growing number of Australian internet marketers are proving. I have seen an 11 year old build a website on stage at a workshop and an 86 year old veteran discover how he can share his services experiences online.

Once you ‘get it’, it is easy to see how you can monetize websites, and create several different profit models. But getting a good mentor is the key, and like so many people are discovering, we have home-grown Australian internet marketing expert here to guide us.
